Do We Know Well Enough About Environmental Sustainability

Sustainability

Dear readers, do you know that the danger bells are ringing?

The 2021 UN IPCC Report emphasizes minimizing the damage and avoiding reaching an irreversible tipping point. The report says that collectively, we need to halve global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reach net zero before 2050.

Urgent change is needed right away!!!

A critical need for immediate and drastic climate action is needed, and there is an indisputable link between climate change and human activity. There's no way around it, right? We can no longer put off our efforts to fight the climate crisis.

Sustainability is a highly urgent and universal concern

The time to act is now!

So, what exactly is Sustainability?

According to the UN World Commission on Environment and Development: "Sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." It is the integration of environmental health, social equity, and economic vitality in order to create thriving, healthy, diverse, and resilient communities for this generation and generations to come.

When we hear the word Sustainability, we must think of-

  • - Renewable fuel sources

  • - Reducing carbon emissions

  • - Keeping the delicate ecosystems of our planet in balance

In short, Sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological health while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life.

Sustainability is about our children, grandchildren, and the world we will leave them in simple terms. We all must understand that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences.

We have now understood that Sustainability is the balance between the environment, equity, and economy. It is agreeable that becoming sustainable does not happen overnight. It takes many smaller steps, sometimes challenging and some into the unknown, to take Sustainability to the next level! Let us have a look at the three pillars of Sustainability:

- Social: It refers to human capital as the creation of tools that improve the citizens' quality of life, laws to support the necessity of the population and the development of education, security, and leisure.

- Environmental: It refers to the many ways of searching for ecological preservation, natural resources, and diminishing the damage caused to the environment over the years.

- Economic: It refers to the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. To have Sustainability, companies cannot profit at the expense of irresponsible exploitation of the environment.

Our crucial responsibility is to maintain perfect harmony and sync between the three pillars.

It is a matter of pride that India has made steady progress towards achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in areas of health, energy, and infrastructure, as per NITI Aayog’s latest SDG Index. Since 2019, India’s overall score across SDGs has gone up from 60 to 66 in 2021 due to nationwide improvement in clean water and sanitation and affordable and clean energy respectively.

Do you want to know what SUPERGAS and our parent company SHV Energyare doing to promote the concept of Sustainability?

Our strategy is based on making cleaner, greener energy options accessible and affordable for as many customers and businesses as possible without compromising the highest health and safety standards or negatively impacting the environment. We see an opportunity and feel a responsibility to make our world better. Our energy is cleaner, and we help people switch to LPG from polluting oil, liquid, and solid fuels. Our aim, through this, is to create clean air and dramatically lower our carbon impact.

We are currently focusing on three horizons that contribute to the global energy transition-

  • - Our core LPG business provides customers with a relatively clean energy source regarding carbon footprint and air quality.

  • - We plan to increase the share of bio-based and renewable fuels in our portfolio by employing cleaner solutions using our current company and customer infrastructure.

  • - We aim to focus on other ways of providing renewable energy services to current market segments. Our goal is to supply 100% renewably sourced energy by 2040.
